He is the youngest of 4 siblings.
His father received a 38-years-to-life sentence in 2016 after pleading guilty to kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery in connection with a drug-related incident under California’s three-strikes law. As of 2023, his father was serving his sentence in Folsom State Prison near Sacramento.
Following his father’s incarceration, his family had to face severe financial debt and they lived in a small apartment above a storage facility when he was in high school.
After C. J. Stroud passed for 3,878 yards and 47 touchdowns, he was the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin offensive player of the year.
He was the MVP of the Elite 11 in the year 2019. The following year, he was selected to play in the All-American Bowl.
C. J. Stroud was initially considered a 3-star recruit but he went on to finish high school as the third-highest-rated quarterback of his class.
During the 2020 season, he spent his true freshman year at Ohio State redshirting as a backup to Justin Fields. Following the departure of Fields to the 2021 NFL Draft, he was named the starting quarterback as a redshirt freshman during the 2021 season. Stroud was chosen over freshmen Kyle McCord, Quinn Ewers, and fellow redshirt freshman Jack Miller III.
He was a Heisman Trophy finalist in both 2021 and 2022.
C. J. Stroud announced on January 16, 2023, that he would forgo his remaining two years of college eligibility and enter the 2023 NFL Draft.
In the 2023 NFL Draft, he was selected by the Houston Texans with the second overall pick on April 27, 2023, and he became the highest-drafted quarterback in Ohio State’s history as the second overall.
He made his NFL debut with the Houston Texans in Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens on September 10, 2023, and threw for 242 yards in the 25–9 loss.
Along with Cam Newton and Justin Herbert, C. J. Stroud became one of the only three players in NFL history to put up at least 900 passing yards in their first three games.
During Week 14 of the 2023 season, he suffered a concussion during the fourth quarter as the Texans lost 30–6 to the New York Jets.
C. J. Stroud became friends with fellow American football quarterback Bryce Young when the two used to attend high schools located in Southern California. Their friendship was continued through college and they were selected with the first two picks in the 2023 NFL Draft.
